Long-take sequences in cinema often risk feeling like flashy technical parlor tricks. But in Julian Vance’s forthcoming neo-noir “Chroma City”, a 14-minute unbroken tracking shot functions as the emotional spine of the second act.

The sequence begins inside an elevator descending twenty stories, passes through a bustling underground casino, spills onto a rain-slicked alleyway, and culminates in a high-speed vehicle confrontation. Vance and his cinematographer, Claire Dubois, rehearsed the camera path for three full weeks prior to rolling film.

“We didn’t want to hide seams behind passing columns or digital motion blur,” Vance explains. “Every transition had to be executed live by human operators transferring a custom 65mm rig from crane to Steadicam to motorized cable dolly in real time.”

“When you take away the safety net of the edit room, the actors and the camera operator become dance partners on a tightrope.”

— Julian Vance, Director

On take twenty-two, at 4:45 AM, the team nailed the entire unbroken take. When the camera finally settled on Thorne’s rain-streaked face for the final breath, the entire crew stood frozen before erupting into cheers.

For cinephiles and aspiring filmmakers, the sequence stands as an exhilarating reminder of cinema’s miraculous physical power.
